Referencing Data

Coscine allows you to reference your data using a persistent identifier (PID). If you want to publish your data, however, please contact your respective library. They will support you in choosing a suitable repository and the subsequent publication.

Referencing using Persistent Identifier (PID)

Coscine uses PIDs (persistent identifiers) to uniquely reference resources. PIDs serve to permanently and unequivocally reference data. A PID contains information such as the URL the data can be found under. Additionally, a URL pointing to describing metadata can be stored.

In case the referenced data is moved to another storage location the information of the PID can be updated so it remains valid. Thereby datasets can be permanently referenced for example in publications.

In Coscine, each resource in a project is automatically assigned a PID. You can use PIDs to link your resources and make them accessible to others.

You can find the PID via the resource settings (see figure below). By clicking on the Clipboard button to the right of the PID, you can copy a link to your resource to the clipboard. This URL will first contain the prefix followed by your PID (e.g.

Resolving PIDs

If you have a PID in URL format with the service prefix (e.g., you can simply enter the URL in the address bar of your web browser and access the referenced resource. If you only have the Coscine PID, you can enter it through the service and resolve it.

If you have entered a valid PID URL, you will be redirected to Coscine immediately. There you will be presented with an input mask that you can use to contact the resource owner (you will also be taken to this landing page if you are the logged-in owner of the resources).


Via the option "Send me a copy" you will receive a proof of the successful request.
