Migration from RDS to DataStorage.nrw
The new storage system (DataStorage.nrw) has been available since mid-2025, replacing the previous system (Research Data Storage). All research data that has already been stored on the RDS via Coscine will be migrated to the new system in stages. Due to the amount of data already stored, the migration will take several months. The data migration will be carried out by the Coscine team, so no action is required on your part.
Info
If you cannot see your projects in Coscine after logging in, this is not related to the migration. The reason for this is the redesign of the login page and the necessary linking of the various login options.
Procedure
The migration takes place on a project-by-project basis. If you have several projects in Coscine, it is therefore possible that they will not be migrated immediately one after the other. For the migration, we start with projects that have been allocated little storage space. Within the project to be migrated, we proceed resource by resource.
Info
If you use S3 resources in Coscine, please note that after migration, you will need to adjust the endpoint and S3 credentials, e.g. for using scripts. You can find the necessary information in the resource settings (pencil icon next to the resource name).
Maintenance mode
During the migration process, the relevant research data must not be edited, as this could disrupt the process. For this reason, the corresponding resources in Coscine will be temporarily inaccessible during the migration, either via the UI, the API or S3 clients. All project owners will be notified of the migration in advance by email.
End of migration
Once the migration is complete, unrestricted access to the data will be available again. All project owners will be notified of the completion of the migration by email.
Warning
Starting September 1, 2025, it will no longer be possible to create new RDS resources. From that point on, only resources for DataStorage.nrw can be created. If your project has already been assigned RDS storage (via request or automatic allocation), please ensure that you distribute the quota to your RDS resources in time. After September 1, 2025, quota distribution for RDS will also be disabled. This step is necessary to ensure a smooth migration. If you still need additional RDS resources for ongoing work, please create them no later than August 31, 2025.
